When the Arkansas River is running at peak summer flows, Cañon City throws the biggest river party in the state. The Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival is a two-day celebration of whitewater culture at Centennial Park, right where the Arkansas River tumbles out of the Royal Gorge and into downtown. Established in 2009, the festival has grown into a major regional event that draws paddlers, runners, mountain bikers, and families from across Colorado.
This is not a spectator-only event. The Whitewater Festival is designed for participation at every skill level, from beginner family raft rides to expert-only 12-mile gorge races. All proceeds benefit the Royal Gorge RIO and support river restoration and community causes.
Whitewater Competitions
Kayak races, raft rodeo, SUP events, river surfing, and the crowd-favorite Build Your Own Boat race. Events range from beginner-friendly to expert-only gorge runs covering 12+ miles of Class III-IV rapids.
Trail Running & Mountain Biking
5K and 10K trail runs along the Arkansas Riverwalk, plus mountain bike rides on South Cañon singletrack with views of the canyon, mountains, and Ecology Park. Family-friendly 5K bike ride available.
Live Music & Entertainment
Multiple stages with live bands performing throughout the weekend. Food vendors, craft beer, and over 100 local vendors round out the festival atmosphere at Centennial Park along the river.
Community Fundraiser
Every dollar raised supports the Royal Gorge RIO, a nonprofit that maintains the whitewater park, funds river restoration projects, and invests in community recreation infrastructure.
The Whitewater Festival captures what daily life in Cañon City actually looks like for people who live here. The river is not a vacation destination you drive hours to reach. It is right there, running through the middle of town, and this community builds its summer around it.
